40 Advertising Quotes About Honesty, Content, and Creativity

40 Advertising Quotes About Honesty, Content, and Creativity40 Advertising Quotes About Honesty, Content, and CreativityIt is tempting to think that old quotes from advertising industry giants like Bill Bernbach or David Oglivy may no longer be of use in the age of social media and online advertising. But a glance at some of their more famous sayings quickly reveals that while the medium has changed, the power of the message remains. Advertising Quotes onHonesty There is a great deal of advertising that is much better than the product. When that happens, all that the good advertising will do is put you out of geschftlicher umgang faster. -Jerry Della Femina The most powerful element in advertising is the truth. -Bill Bernbach Facts are irrelevant. What matters is what the consumer believes. -Seth Godin I am one who believes that one of the greatest dangers of advertising is not that of misleading people, but that of boring them to death. -Leo Burnett Telling lies does not work in advertising. -Tim Bell Thats the kind of ad I like, facts, facts, facts. - Samuel Goldwyn Our job is to bring the dead facts to life. -Bill Bernbach The greatest thing to be achieved in advertising, in my opinion, is believability, and nothing is more believable than the product itself. -Leo Burnett The worst thing for a brand is to have a kind of false part of who they are exposed out there. -Lee Clow Certainly, it seems true enough that theres a good deal of irony in the world ... I mean, if you live in a world full of politicians and advertising, theres obviously a lot of deception. -Kenneth Koch Never write an advertisement which you wouldnt want your own family to read. You wouldnt tell lies to your own wife. Dont tell them to mine. Do as you would be done by. If you tell lies about a product, you will be found out. -David Ogilvy The advertisement is the most truthful part of a newspaper. -Thomas Jefferson Advertising Quotes on Content What really decides consumers to buy or not to buy is the content of your advertising, not its form. -David Ogilvy A good advertisement is one which sells the product without drawing attention to itself. -David Ogilvy Make it simple. Make it memorable. Make it inviting to look at. Make it fun to read. -Leo Burnett We want consumers to say, Thats a hell of a product instead of, Thats a hell of an ad. -Leo Burnett The more informative your advertising, the more persuasive it will be. -David Ogilvy What you say in advertising is more important than how you say it. -David Ogilvy Lets say you have $1 million tied up in your little company and suddenly your advertising isnt working and sales are going down. And everything depends on it. Your future depends on it, your familys future depends on it, other peoples families depend on it. Now, what do you want from me? Fine writing? Or do you want to see the goddamned sales curve stop moving down and departure moving up?-Rosser Reeves Dont tell me how good you make it tell me how good it makes me when I use it. -Leo Burnett An ad is finished only when you no longer can find a single element to remove. -Robert Fleege On the average, five times as many people read the headlines as read the body copy. -David Ogilvy If you are writing about baloney, dont try and make it Cornish hen, because thats the worst kind of baloney there is. Just make it darn good baloney. -Leo Burnett If youre trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language, the language in which they think. -David Ogilvy I dont know how to speak to everybody, only to somebody. -Howard Gossage You have to be daring and make something that doesnt look like anybody else. -Lee Clow It takes a big idea to attract the attention of consumers and get them to buy your product. Unless your advertising contains a big idea, it will pass like a ship in the night. I doubt if more than one campaign in a hundred contains a big idea. -David Ogilvy Think like a w ise man but communicate in the language of the people -William Butler Yeats Advertising Quotes on Creativity Advertising is the ability to sense, interpret ... to put the very heart throbs of a business into type, paper, and ink. -Leo Burnett Creativity is like washing a pig. Its messy. It has no rules. No clear beginning, middle or end. Its kind of a pain in the ass, and when youre done, youre not sure if the pig is really clean or even why you were washing a pig in the first place. -Luke Sullivan Nothing comes from nothing. You must continuously feed the inner beast that sparks and inspires. -George Lois Creativity and innovation are about finding unexpected solutions to obvious problems, or finding obvious solutions to unexpected problems. -Rei Inamoto If it doesnt sell, it isnt creative. -David Ogilvy There are a lot of great technicians in advertising. And unfortunately, they talk the best game. They know all the rules ... but theres one little rub. They forget that adverti sing is persuasion, and persuasion is not a science, but an art. Advertising is the art of persuasion.-William Bernbach I dont know the rules of grammar ... If youre trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language, the language they use every day, the language in which they think. We try to write in the vernacular. -David Ogilvy An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it. -Bill Bernbach To swear off making mistakes is very easy. All you have to do is to swear off having ideas. -Leo Burnett In the modern world of business, it is useless to be a creative, original thinker unless you can also sell what you create. -David Ogilvy Ive learned that any fool can write a bad ad, but that it takes a real genius to keep his hands off a good one. -Leo Burnett Big ideas come from the unconscious. This is true in art, in science, and in advertising. But your unconscious has to be well informed, or your idea will be irrelevant. Stuff your conscious mind with information, then unhook your rational thought process. -David Ogilvy

Managing an Underperforming Employee

Managing an Underperforming EmployeeManaging an Underperforming EmployeeThink of your office as a rowing crew. As the office coxswain, or rolle in command, its your responsibility to identify underperforming employees on your boat and help them out of their slump. After all, it takes multiple oars to reach the finish line. When any member fails to pull his or her weight, it drags down the entire kollektivs performance. The next time you feel your team going adrift because of an underperforming employee, try these five steps to turn things around and boost productivity.1. Address the problem immediatelyApproach an underperforming employee immediately so you can discuss the poor performance and set a corrective course ASAP. But you need to be tactful. You dont want to launch right into a list of things the administrative professional is doing wrong. Otherwise, your employee will become defensive right away and tune you out. When it comes to this initial conversation, the more constructi ve your criticism is, the better.Explain that you have observed a decline in work quality and ask if theres something going on. Listen for cues about interpersonal conflicts that might be hindering the worker. Perhaps he or she feel further training is needed to perform well in the role. Or there may be issues outside of work. Make sure you reiterate, and that the person grasps, the full scope of their responsibilities and expectations for the position. 2. Set goalsA real leader (and a good boss) will give the underperforming employee the opportunity to turn his or her poor performance around. Work with the admin to develop a work-improvement plan. The key is to create the plan together - he or she must be as invested in improving the situation as you are.Your job as a manager is to identify resources, tools and support that are available to help the worker turn the corner. This could include software, professional training or guided mentorship from a more experienced member of the team. Also be sure to set a timeframe for improvement. Its critical you make it clear when you expect to see a change in performance. 3. Provide feedbackIts up to you to assess progress on the performance-improvement plan. Set aside time for regular check-ins with the administrative professional to provide feedback on what the underperforming employee is doing well and what he or she must mucksmuschenstill do differently, especially in light of the timeframe you have set. Ask about challenges or hurdles the person might be facing and what support you can offer. Document these sessions for your records letting a staff member know youre doing so will show him or her that you take improvement seriously.4. Reward improvementEncouragement goes a long way toward inspiring improvement. If you notice an underperforming employee making a concerted effort to take different approaches to his or her work and signs of steady improvement, acknowledge it.A simple good job can be all thats needed t o help your worker remain on the right track. Remember, your job is not to frighten the struggling team member but rather to provide incentive and guidance to improve.5. Know when to let goIf the admins performance is still lacking after providing multiple opportunities to make improvements, and having a documented improvement plan in place, its probably time to parte ways. Knowing when to make this call can be difficult, but its an essential duty of every effective manager.

Pity the Educated Man for He Shall Be Remorseful

Pity the Educated Man for He Shall Be RemorsefulPity the Educated Man for He Shall Be RemorsefulNew research on regret tells us about the causes of our biggest sorrows. In order of anguish, we regret things related to romance, then family, education, career, finance and parenting. Those are the top six sources of regret. Turns out the more educated people are, the more likely they are to feel pangs of remorse.Women, who tend to value social relationships more than men, have more regrets of love (romance, family) compared to men. Conversely, men were more likely to have work-related (career, education) regrets. Those who lack either higher education or a romantic relationship hold the most regrets in precisely these areas.Americans with high levels of education had the most career-related regrets. Apparently, the more education obtained, the more acute may be the sensitivity to aspiration and fulfillment. Moreover, the youngest and least-educated people in our sample, who most likely possess the greatest capability of fixing their regrets, were indeed the most likely to provide fixable regrets.via MindhacksPhoto credit Kellogg School of Management

Bringing the Power of Movies to the Conference Room (With and Without Video)

Bringing the Power of Movies to the Conference Room (With and Without Video) Bringing the Power of Movies to the Conference Room (With and Without Video) When it comes to attracting, training, motivating, and unifying employees, mora and mora companies are using a powerful new tool. Its not a new technology. Rather, its a technique based on something we already know and love movies.Weve all experienced how powerful movies are. In seconds, they can make even the fruchtwein distant planet feel real. Their heroes teach and inspire us. The moments they create move us, shape our opinions, and rally us together. Thats why companies are increasingly using videos and movie-style storytelling to harness that speed and power for internal communication and presentations. Here are just a few examples of how theyre doing itRecruitmentWhen youre courting new employees, a movie that positions your company as a strategic leader headed for bigger things can be especially attractive. It also doesnt hurt to show how fun your employees are. Even more persuasive is presenting your people as colleagues your prospects can look up to. A short movie can do that for you and bring out the true personality of your company to new prospects. Rallying New and Current Employees Around the MissionWhen starting a new job, most employees are handed a stack of decks that leave them completely lost. What if, instead, you show new hires a dynamic five-minute movie telling the companys story, mission, and strategy? New hires will be excited, retain more, and start contributing right away. If you include stories of real customers and get the companys leaders on camera, your film can also breathe life into the companys mission in ways no written statement can achieve.PresentationsEven without video, the way movies tell stories is actually a surprisingly good fit for corporate execs.Movie storytelling is built on the same principles they are currently seeking in presentations being simple, quick, vi sual, and powerful.Using the Screenwriter Approach toSimplifyScreenwriters are able to write so quickly because they start with three key scenes, then build the rest of the movie around them. You can do the same thing Decide which three things in your presentation are most important to your stakeholders and emphasize those. Youll find this method makes it easier to write your presentation, and because youre emphasizing just three keys, youll be able to choose what people remember. Think about what would happen if you tried to evenly emphasize 10 different pointsUsing the Directors Approach to Make It Quick, Real, and RelevantEvery slide, even a data point or chart, is about something. That means it can be described as a scene, with characters, a setting, and action. Describing your slides in these terms will make it much easier for your stakeholders to grasp the main ideas because you will give them something to relate to.One good way to find the scene in your slide or chart is with two words you use all the time For example. Look at your data point, and then say, For example This will immediately put characters, a setting, and action in your head. Then, if you make it visual, youll make your point even more quickly and put everyone on the same page because they will all see it the same way. When You Really Need to Hit It Out of the Park, Make It PowerfulFor the everyday presentation, being simple and relevant is often enough. However, when the stakes are especially high, you can take it up a level and truly move your stakeholders with movies that start with an emotional arc.The emotional archolds us in our seats, makes us love and remember movies, and floods our brains with two amazing hormones cortisol, which makes us focus, and oxytocin, which opens us up to new ideas and inspires us.You can spark these two hormones with an arc Ive seen work time and time again in corporations establish urgency, build desirefor your idea, and finish by evoking confidence. T hat arc will take your stakeholders through an emotional journey of we need to do this, we want to do this, and we can do this all of which will build support for your insights and ideas. Those are just a few of the movie-style strategies companies are using today. There are many, many more. None of these strategies are all that difficult to implement, and they can all make a huge difference in your ability to connect, communicate, and inspire.Ted Frank is the author of Get to the Heart. As a story strategist at Backstories Studio, he uses movie-style storytelling to help people make their presentations quicker, more visual, and more emotionally effective.

Long-Lasting Wireless Brain Implants

Long-Lasting Wireless Brain Implants Long-Lasting Wireless Brain Implants Long-Lasting Wireless Brain ImplantsIn the spring of 2013, inspiration came to Michel Maharbiz while he stood in a parking lot. Why not use ultrasound to power implantable devices, record and communicate brain activity, and, potentially, to stimulate nerves within the human body?By that summer, his team at the University of California Berkeley had published a paper depicting, mathematically, how the tiny devices would operate. By August 2016, theyd built the dust-sized wireless sensors, implanted them in rats muscles and peripheral nerves, and published their brain dust research findings in the journal Neuron.Brain implants are used for those with Parkinsons disease, epilepsy, or clinical depression. Theyre also being studied to help those who have suffered a stroke or head injury. Implants within the spinal cord to stimulate nerves help with chronic pain and for issues like sleep apnea. Other implants stimulat e the muscles to allow them to operate. In the future, a patient with a neural implant may be able to use a prosthetic limb in the ways humans do their natural limbs without thinking consciously about how they want the arm or leg to move. The sensor, 3 mm long and 11 mm in cross section, is powered by ultrasound. Image UC BerkeleyBefore his sudden inspiration, Maharbiz had been toying with a problem that has long dogged neural technology researchers. Conventional implants used to record brain activity or stimulate nerves are presently comprised of long, thin wires topped with electrodes and connected at sites within and outside the body. The wired implants literally emanate from the patient, says Maharbiz, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences at the University of California Berkeley.Whats more, they quit functioning after about five or six years, with some failing much earlier than that due to the effects of their environment. This is one of the big c hallenges of neural technology how to build an implant that will last for a long time in the body, he says. The cells start ripping apart the implant and wires are rubbing on areas inside the body and you may get a fibrous mass that grows around the implant. The researchers call their devices neural dust. Theyre about the size of a grain of sand and are comprised of a piezoelectric crystal that converts ultrasound vibrations from outside the body into electricity to power a tiny transistor that rests on a part of the brain, a nerve, or muscle fiber. The sensors are unique not only in their size, but also because ultrasound is used both to power the device and communicate measurements. Ultrasound technology is already widely used in the medical field, and ultrasound vibrations can penetrate nearly anywhere in the body, unlike radio waves, Maharbiz says.We can make these tiny, free-floating implants for communicating and recording brain activity and were already doing nerve stimulation with them, he adds. And we can implant them into people and have it last for 20 years or more. But the duties of the neural dust of the future may be much broader in scope, says neuroscience graduate student Ryan Neely, who worked on the project. The original goal of the neural dust project was to imagine the next generation of brain-machine interfaces, and to make it a viable clinical technology, Nelly says. If a paraplegic wants to control a computer or a robotic arm, you would just implant this electrode in the brain and it would last essentially a lifetime. But the devices open the door to communicating all kinds of information about whats happening in a patients body, Maharbiz says.Having access to in-body telemetry has never been possible because there has been no way to put something super-tiny super-deep. But now I can take a speck of nothing and park it next to a nerve or organ, your GI tract, or a muscle, and read out the data, he says.Implants take about a decade to become c ommercialized and receive FDA approval and Maharbiz expects the neural dust to be no different.Once approved, the dust will become vital to many patients lives. Certainly not the kind of dust theyll want to sweep under the rug.Jean Thilmany is an independent writer. We can make these tiny, free-floating implants for communicating and recording brain activity and were already doing nerve stimulation with them.Prof. Michel Maharbiz, University of California Berkeley

Related Articles Around the Web Gainsight, Inc. One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaff old. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot mora to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender -diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welder s ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

10 Free and Easy Ways to Celebrate a Co-worker - The Muse

10 Free and Easy Ways to Celebrate a Co-worker - The Muse10 Free and Easy Ways to Celebrate a Co-workerYou like your co-workers, right? Or, you at least appreciate them for all the hard work theyve done over the years. In some cases, you wouldnt even be where you are without their support, help, and positivity (especially on the rougher days). So, dont you want to acknowledge them when they have a small win, celebrate a birthday, or reach a big milestone? And the thing is, celebrating someone else is actually beneficial for you, too It makes people more likely to share your achievements, it makes you look good (you hang out with happy, successful people, so you must be as well), and it strengthens your relationships with all your colleagues. But the tricky thing is, most of us cant afford to congratulate our co-workers with the gifts and free drinks. Thats why I put together 10 completely free ideas thatll be just as good as (if elend, better than) purchasing something.1. Just Say ItS o simple, yet so overlooked. But it really is that easy- nothing feels better and more partieal than to hear from someone else that he or she is impressed by your work or remembered your special day. Because we tend to get glued to our screens and inboxes, we forget that there are actual people sitting near us who could use a genuine, honest boost. So, get up out of your desk, walk over to your co-workers, and say Happy Birthday or Great job on that big sale Its such a small gesture that you dont even realize how powerful it is.2. Shout it Out to the gruppeA lot of times people dont necessarily advertise their birthdays or achievements because they dont want to sound obnoxious or self-involved- which is why it can be your job to brag for them.Do you have a company-wide messaging app like Slack or HipChat? Tag the person and let everyone know how awesome she is with a bundle of emojis. Or, send out an email to your team (or if its a small company, your arbeitszimmer) highlighting the persons accomplishment. Or, if youre crafty, create a shout-out board. A what? We created a shout-out board at The Muse for people to share anonymous good work notes with the whole company. It lives in our kitchen and is always full of shout-outs to various teammates for hitting goals and just being all-around awesome people. 3. Send a Thoughtful EmailWe all get emails every day, and most of them arent too exciting- so why not surprise someone with a message he or she will actually look forward to reading? And its not just about sending Congrats and clicking send- its about taking the time to think about how the persons impacted you and sharing that. And it doesnt need to be super serious I celebrated a birthday over vacation once and my boss sent an email full of hilarious GIFs and a nice note. It cost her nothing to do, and it totally made my day to know my team was thinking of me. 4. Or, Write (or Draw) a NoteEmail is great, but lets take it up a notch and really personalize you r letter. Are you a good artist? Draw him a picture of his favorite animal, or a funny cartoon about your office. Do you have awesome handwriting? Print out a cute card online and fill it out with kind words about her. At The Muse, co-workers desks are full of cards theyve received from their colleagues- because on our rougher days, theres no better pick-me-up than kind words from our co-workers.5. Decorate the DeskIf youre up for it, get artsy. Decorate the persons desk, or hang a printable banner above her workspace, or cut out fun party hats for her, and your team, to sport throughout the day (brownie points from us if everyone actually wears them all day). 6. Give People What They WantOK, you probably cant guarantee your co-worker free reign on his special day (unless youre his manager and have that authority), but theres probably some perk you could offer him. Is there a pair of noise-cancelling headphones hes been dying to borrow from you or a shared office snack that always g et snatched up fast? If theres a way for you to sacrifice today- like giving up a conference room that he needs- do it. 7. Offer to HelpOffering to help a colleague out is always a nice thing to do, especially if youre not particularly swamped that day. But its also a great way to show your gratitude and make his special day a little less stressful. When I worked in a smaller office in a more administrative role, people would always do something nice on my birthday- a.k.a., take care of a few of the tasks I hated doing. It was great not to have to make the coffee on my birthday, says Kat Boogaard, a writer at The Muse.So give him a break from a big project youre both working on, or answer a frustrating email if youre both looped in and you know this person drives him crazy, or offer to attend a meeting and share notes so he can get ahead on his to-do list and leave early.8. Share Some Free SwagOdds are that your office and co-workers have extra swag thats not claimed by anyone. Why not grab a cool T-shirt or hat for a co-worker when he or she hits a goal or has a birthday? Remember one persons conference goody bag trash is another mans treasure. So dont overlook those free notebooks or tote bags.9. Post on Social MediaYes, social media is free- and it reaches an even wider audience When your colleagues celebrating something, share it on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. Especially if that person is away or out of the office, it means the world to know your co-workers miss and care about you.10. Pen a RecommendationIf someone recently got promoted or closed a big deal, a professional and supportive thing to do is write a LinkedIn recommendation. This shows that you respect this person as a colleague and want to see him or her continue to succeed. Its also awesome because its something that most people feel uncomfortable asking for, but really appreciate when its offered unsolicited.Congratulating someone doesnt take money to be meaningful- if you do any, or all, of these ideas, youll be sure to make anyones day truly perfect.

But most hiring professionals, while admitting to personal preferences and pet peeves, are far more interested in finding the right person for the job than rejecting a candidate for a single mistake. Kerry over at Clue Wagon posted a great article about candidate deal breakers last week. Bottom line Dont agonize if you made one little boo-boowere all human. Just know that certain big, bad behaviors are show stoppers that hiring managers have trouble overlooking. Here are three of themPutting the wrong company name in your titel letterWriting hear instead of here in your cover letter may elicit an eye roll, but it probably wont destroy your chance of get ting hired. However, if youre applying to Smith Co. and your cover letter talks about how eager you are to work for Jones Co., youve just told your prospective employer, I will probably embarrass you on the job because I dont pay attention to detail and I make stupid mistakes.LyingThis ones pretty obvious. If you lie on your resume or in your interview about your education, your experience, your skills, or your credentials, youll be rejected as soon as they find out. If youve got negative information to explain, be brief and truthful.Being rude or disrespectful to othersThis doesnt refer to just your interviewers. Youll be judged on how you treat the parking attendant, security personnel, receptionist, administrative staff, and anyone else you encounter. Good hiring managers always seek feedback from their support staff about a prospective new hire. And even if they dont, the office grapevine will ensure the news of your bad behavior gets relayed.I could go on and on about other way s job candidates sabotage their own efforts, but the whole concept is really as simple as mother always said Pay attention, tell the truth, and be nice.

The entrepreneurs list of 2018 New Years resolutions

The entrepreneurs list of 2018 New Years resolutionsThe entrepreneurs list of 2018 New Years resolutionsNo matter how busy you are as an entrepreneur, its important to still take the time to reflect on what you can do better in your work and life. However, even with the best of intentions, time often gets away from us and those goals to make improvements do, too. Thats why Ive started now on the changes that I want to make in 2018. While my plans to do things differently in 2018 may not be what you had in mind for yourself, I wanted to share them as an inspiration to get started on those things you have been considering but not acting on.Return to collegeRegardless of the fact that I run multiple businesses, actively participate in the conference speaking circuit and have a family, Ive decided to head back to college. Ill be enrolled in the masters program for entrepreneurs at Stanford University. Its accelerated so I wont be in school for a long time. Instead, it forces me to adjust my schedule and become mora regimented and diversified in what I do every day.Plus, the work Ill be doing as part of the program will only furtzu sich benefit my businesses. I can use the problems and issues I face in my own businesses as case studies for the work I have to complete to earn my degree. Taking this route also provides a different perspective that I didnt have while primarily working within my own bubble. When you consider making this kind of change to your schedule, it does require significant planning. Youll need to research the type of program you may want to enroll in, the type of degree you want to earn and the amount of time it will take. Do also take into account how long youll need to spend applying to the program, as paperwork must be filed typically months in advance.Once you are accepted, youll also need to determine which classes you might be able to take online and how it impacts on your daily work schedule, including any homework and research projects. I also had to discuss this significant change with my better half to see if it works for her schedule and how we divide up our responsibilities at home.Formalize business practicesIn the constant rush of entrepreneurship, the basics of business often are forgotten. This happens when you are on the go or are putting out fires that crop up as you build out a business. You can often overlook details regarding strict business practices, such as formalizing written policies and creating a structure for onboarding talent. These things are important. But in prioritizing what can be a mountain of responsibility, its easy to put them to the side to accomplish later.Ive realized that later long passed and that I have to make a conscious effort to formalize my business practices before the businesses gets any larger. It will take considerable work to create policies and procedures about how we work, the parameters and restrictions on any freelancers I hire and the need for security measures. Add itionally, I am implementing an onboarding program that includes an agreement for each freelancer or employee, online training and gruppe integration. This will ensure that everyone is on the same page and operates more efficiently as a cohesive unit.Define a company cultureMany entrepreneurs believe that a company culture is not necessary for startups and that you can work on developing it later in the business. I realized quickly that the culture starts with me and how I interact with those who work with me. Its never too late to get started with culture.Thats why its a priority for me in 2018. Since I already have a team in place, I am including them in developing the definition by asking them what they would like to see in our culture and how we can all make those values a reality, even when virtually spread across the world. Involving the team in the process will help them embrace the new culture more quickly than if I simply tell them about it.Once it is established, I plan to regularly communicate about what it means and how we can make it our own. Additionally, I plan to ask other members of my team to share what the culture means to them. This will help me understand each person, whats important to them and what they expect from me.Take on more social causesAs I participate as a speaker at larger conferences and further develop my thought leadership position online, I see an opportunity to leverage this growing audience and influencer ability to publicize social causes that are important to me. If I dont, then Im not taking advantage of the role to generate awareness and move people to action beyond just marketing my company and personal brands. It doesnt have to feel like a soapbox. Instead, share the various projects or roles that you have taken on in the new year. I like to mention helping others locally in Silicon Valley and around the world through projects my wife and I get involved in while we travel. Simply sharing ansicht causes and explaining why you got involved is a perfect way to influence others, including fellow entrepreneurs, team members or customers to do the same. What I wont be doing differently in 2018There are some things I dont plan on changing. Ill still work just as hard albeit smarter. There wont be any slowing down. It will be about finding ways to further accelerate my goals.John Ramptonis the founder of Palo Alto, California-basedCalendar, a company helping your calendar be much more productive. This column first appeared at BusinessCollectiveMore from Ladders10 ridiculously smart questions you should ask in a job interviewNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy6 reasons recruiters say theyll toss your resume in the trash
